Flying Arts 500 Club celebrated at Art at ‘Toonarbin’ Event

Flying Arts’ 500 Club is a valued group of donors who significantly help us grow our programs and services that support and develop established, emerging and aspiring artists, young people and communities across Queensland.  500 Club donations strengthen our signature event, the Queensland Regional Art awards, and, importantly, help us connect isolated regional and remote Queensland communities through visual arts activities and programs.

The grand doors of ‘Toonarbin’, the magnificently restored Georgian home of early settler, Captain Henry O’Reilly, and former convent, were opened wide to Flying Arts Alliance and guests on Friday, 24 August to grow our 500 Club donor circle at a very special fundraising event.

See pictures and read the speeches from the event.

If you are interested in donating to the 500 Club, or would like to give to the Flying Arts Alliance ‘Art for Life’ fund, please contact development@flyingarts.org.au  or donate online.

Have you voted yet for People’s Choice?

New Trust and Foundation Supporter

Flying Arts Alliance is thrilled to announce its newest Trust and Foundation supporter, Gandel Philanthropy. Their generosity will ensure that our Small Schools Program, providing enriching arts experiences to schools and communities with the least access, will continue to expand and thrive.  Thank you, Gandel Philanthropy!

Small Schools Fund Outcome: Avondale State School

Inspired by scientific exploration processes, students from Avondale State School invited Flying Arts Alliance’s, Kayako (Kay) Watanabe to facilitate a workshop on how to record their observations artistically.

Over three days, the Avondale State School students participated in a variety of printmaking activities facilitated by Kay, centered on (but not limited to) the theme of bugs. After learning about insects in Science, the students were encouraged to apply their scientific knowledge to design suitable plates for printmaking.

Event Details

Learn how to build experimental microphones with the artist and musician Ross Manning.

Over the past decade, Manning has developed what could be described as his own world, animated by light and sound. He is an obsessive creator of systems that are driven by their own logic, and of moving objects propelled by electricity and their own kinetic forces. In 2017, the Institute of Modern Art (IMA) organised the first survey exhibition of his practice, Dissonant Rhythms, which is currently touring around Australia.

During the Webinar Manning will demonstrate how to make two types of contact microphones by stripping cable wires, playing with guitar jacks, and other electronics. With these skills you will be able to build own experimental microphone to explore your surroundings, and discover what sounds different objects conduct.

Additional Information

Ross Manning’s practice spans experimental music, new technologies, and immersive installations that often involve the play of light. Recent solo and group exhibitions include: ‘Other People Think’, Auckland Art Gallery, New Zealand; ‘Ambient Works Vol 2’, Milani Gallery, Brisbane; ‘Material Sound’, Murray Art Museum Albury, Australia (all 2018); ‘The Imagined Future is Not the Future’,OCT-LOFT Shenzhen, China; ‘Wrong Note’, Gallery Augusta, Suomenlinna, Finland (all 2017); ‘Why Not Ask Again?’, 11th Shanghai Biennale, China; ‘Set in Motion’, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zealand; ‘Ross Manning’, Carriageworks, Sydney, Australia; ‘Device for Messaging Nothing’, Milani Gallery, Brisbane, Australia; and ‘Colour Shift’, Loop, Seoul, Korea (all 2016).

Event Details

Learn about the Arts Law Artists in the Black program, including the different services that are offered as part of the program. The different types of clients and creative sectors helped through the AITB program the and the common types of problems that they have will be discussed. Specific examples and case studies of the legal issues that have helped AITB clients will also be shared.

Artists in the Black (AITB) is a specialised service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, creatives, communities and arts organisations. It is operated by the Arts Law Centre of Australia (Arts Law), the national community legal centre for the arts. The AITB service aims to provide access to free or low cost, culturally appropriate, specialist legal resources to support and strengthen the Indigenous arts sector. They do this in order for Indigenous creators to achieve professional excellence, a sustainable income in a non-exploitative environment and to achieve better recognition of Indigenous intellectual property.

AITB aims to:

  • Increase access by Indigenous artists, art organisations and Indigenous communities to legal advice on arts law issues, including Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP).
  • Increase access to legal information about arts law issues and develop appropriate publications.
  • Increase understanding and awareness of Indigenous artists and communities of arts law issues through an education programme.
  • Provide informed advocacy work on ICIP issues and other arts law issues affecting the Indigenous community.
  • Develop arts-specific law expertise within the Indigenous community.

The other key focus area for AITB is responding to the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists on the better protection of, and respect for, Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP). The misuse and misappropriation of ICIP causes significant distress and harm to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their cultures and we continue to look at legal and advocacy strategies to provide protection and remedies in this regard.

Additional Information

Dr. Rhi Johnson is a Toowoomba based artist and lecturer who works primarily in the fields of Printmaking, Artist’s Books and Mixed Media art.  She is interested in the formation of everyday narratives, and how these can be disrupted or subverted visually.  Rhi investigates visual cues that  can punctuate an environment, object or space of perceived meaning, and in doing so, may allude to subconscious methods of processing information.  She explores these through smaller scale book, paper and canvas works, through to large-scale mural works.

Karri McPherson was born in Hong Kong and emigrated to Australia soon after. She is a contemporary painter and muralist living in Toowoomba, Queensland and is undertaking a Bachelor of Creative Art at the University of Southern Queensland. Throughout 2017, she undertook a month-long residency learning how to translate her work onto a large scale, ultimately leading to her participation in the First Coat Festival. Her practice explores geometric art in relation to contemporary spatial confinements and through her hard-edge forms she seeks to break down the boundaries of perception. By actualising hard-edge forms within a public setting, McPherson seeks to understand the power that geometric street art has to infuse communities with the simplistic beauty of shape, form and colour.

Event Details

Showcasing the talent of our artist membership from Brisbane and regional Queensland, this exhibition takes the form of small scale three dimensional works displayed on plinths in the foyer space and corridors of level 2 at the Judith Wright Centre.

The Spring Exhibition features works from artist members Jacqueline Sanderson, Bodhi Del Mar, wild + parrot, and Cindy Wood.

Jacqueline Sanderson, Coolum

Jacqueline Sanderson is a visual artist who has lived on the Sunshine Coast since 2007. Jacqueline is inspired by nature, people, and the lived experience and she describes herself as an eclectic artist and maker whose artwork is meaningful and good-natured. Jacqueline paints, and creates by reusing and transforming discarded and found objects from nature. She completed her BA in Visual Arts (QUT) in 1995 and is currently completing an undergraduate degree in Psychology at USC.  view works

Bodhi Del Mar, Mudgeeraba

Bodhi Del Mar is a photographer & visual artist working from her home studio on the Gold Coast. Her disciplines include landscape, composite & mixed media photography, cold glass, stencilling and body painting. Her admiration for Mother Nature and love for beautiful spaces that make you “feel good” inspire her work, exploring such themes as the profundity of the natural world and our choices as humans to exist either within or against it. view works

wild + parrot, Brisbane

Formed in 2018 wild +parrot brings together the collaborative works of Brisbane based artists Glen Skien and Michelle Wild.  Within the collision of discarded materials and collage, their small handmade objects evoke a continual desire to retrieve and re-present new narratives in a series of wearable pieces and small objects. Collectively the response of both artists presents a style and method of storytelling that affords a whimsical and impulsive collection of wearable art pieces. view works

Cindy Wood, North Tamborine

Cindy’s woven sculptural works are designed and created in an outdoor garden studio. Materials are gathered from the nearby forest and scattered through out the garden.  Cindy loves exploring nature, as there is so much to see in the bark of a tree, the patterns that form and the way the branches decide to grow. She attempts to interpret a story of nature and share the beauty of the secrets it holds.   view works

She attempts to interpret a story of nature and share the beauty of the secrets it holds.   view works
