Celebrating twenty years in 2018, Artlands is the biennial event that shines a national spotlight on Australia’s regional arts.
Artlands Victoria 2018 is a multi-art, cross industry and inter-generational event that provides regional connections. It aims to combine a curated program of works in progress, explorations and commissioned projects alongside an engaged speakers program.
Regional Arts Fund Artlands 2018 Travel Assistance Grants are available to assist Queensland-based regional, rural and remote artists, arts practitioners and volunteers to attend.
Regional Arts Fund Quick Response Grants are also open for projects commencing on or after four weeks from time of application.
Approaching Deadlines
Flying Arts’ Exhibition Development Program gives artists the opportunity to gain insight on how to design, plan and manage their own group or solo exhibitions – and develop well-resolved exhibition proposals to match! Bookings close August 13.
One Exhibition Development Program participant may be selected to present a solo or group exhibition at QCA Galleries, so take advantage of this exciting opportunity.
Applications close August 24 for Artiz Street Art at USQ, our residential program for young aspiring street artists! Students from years 9 – 12 will paint, spray, stencil and tape their way to creating a 30m x 3m mural in the street art capital of Queensland.
Travel subsidies are available for students travelling more than 300km in each direction to attend the Artiz programs, thanks to Brian Tucker Accounting.

Elysha Rei is a Japanese-Australian visual artist and arts manager based in Brisbane, with a passion for providing opportunities and professional development for artists and communities. Since completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts, Rei has exhibited work, curated exhibitions and managed cultural spaces across Queensland as well as Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin, New Zealand Thailand and the US.
Rei’s experiences as an artist extend to independent exhibitions, art commissions and projects for clients such as Museum of Brisbane, Onespace Gallery, Brisbane City Council, Artisan, Redland City Council, QIC, Engage Arts, First Coat International Street Art Festival and Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery. She has also held roles as founder and Co-Director of the artist-run initiative Made Creative Space Toowoomba (2011-13), Director of the regional art gallery Dogwood Crossing in Miles (2012-13), and founder and Director of the international artist residency Sam Rit Residency, in Thailand (2013-17). She now holds a Master’s in Business Administration and is currently working to develop the first Education and Public Program at the Queensland State Archives.

John Stafford is a Director of CREATIVEMOVE, a Brisbane-based visual arts consultancy providing strategic advice and delivering outcomes for the arts, built environment and government sectors. The company specialises in public art commissions, artist services and curatorial projects. In November 2016, John and co-director, Jodie Cox, launched Onespace Gallery in Highgate Hill, Brisbane, a mixed-model style of gallery and innovative space to present contemporary art and design.

Make your mark on Toowoomba, the street art capital of Queensland! Extend your skills in street art mediums, put theory into practice to create a large street art mural at the University of Southern Queensland, and explore the potential of a career in art.
Participants will take a walking tour of First Coat Festival murals, before participating in a series of workshops and activities, including concept development, tape work, working with stencils, aerosol painting and large-scale image transfers.
The intensive will culminate in participants creating a collaborative public mural measuring 30m wide by 3m high.

Dr. Rhi Johnson is a Toowoomba based artist and lecturer who works primarily in the fields of Printmaking, Artist’s Books and Mixed Media art. She is interested in the formation of everyday narratives, and how these can be disrupted or subverted visually. Rhi investigates visual cues that can punctuate an environment, object or space of perceived meaning, and in doing so, may allude to subconscious methods of processing information. She explores these through smaller scale book, paper and canvas works, through to large-scale mural works.
Karri McPherson was born in Hong Kong and emigrated to Australia soon after. She is a contemporary painter and muralist living in Toowoomba, Queensland and is undertaking a Bachelor of Creative Art at the University of Southern Queensland. Throughout 2017, she undertook a month-long residency learning how to translate her work onto a large scale, ultimately leading to her participation in the First Coat Festival. Her practice explores geometric art in relation to contemporary spatial confinements and through her hard-edge forms she seeks to break down the boundaries of perception. By actualising hard-edge forms within a public setting, McPherson seeks to understand the power that geometric street art has to infuse communities with the simplistic beauty of shape, form and colour.

Lee Fullarton is a practicing and teaching artist that has worked extensively with children of all ages within schools and alternative settings in Australia and in New Delhi, India. Lee has extensive experience in: visual art practices with children, artist in residence programs, arts project management, developing curriculum resources in the arts for education, galleries and museums. Peta Lloyd (Coowonga, near Rockhampton)
Peta Lloyd describes herself as a bricoleur… transforming everyday ordinary stories through the skillful marriage of collected materials, folded pages and prints. She is a visual storyteller, creating quirky, elegant and optimistic narratives, often housing these unique stories within a vessel. Peta uses layered symbols and motifs to create multiple meanings. read more
Nicola Hooper (Logan)
Nicola’s work explores concepts surrounding human/animal relationships via “zoonoses”. She does this both visually and verbally through fairy tale and rhyme contexts using drawing and lithography. Her exhibited books are all mosquito repellent. The encaustic covers are combined with Citronella oil. The lithographic books are printed with combined ink and citronella oil. read more
Gemma Garcia-Roman (Brisbane)
Gemma Garcia-Roman has an interest in integrating the Spanish culture (her heritage) to her current home Australia. Her work is colourful, and she tries to combine some archetype ideas from distinct cultures; from Spain (Spanish dresses patterns like red with white polka dots), bulls, and Australian animals (koalas, kangaroos, etc). Her artworks are influenced by famous Spanish and Latin artists, Picasso and Frida Kahlo. read more
Ann Russell (Cashmere)
Ann Russell works with liminal spaces caught just outside ‘real’ existence, seen and simultaneously unseen. Her works are depictions of these spaces, often based on Surreal narratives using mixed media in a bricolage form – combining elements and symbols that retain some of their meaning from our world, juxtaposed with new meaning in the worlds she creates. read more

Jacqueline Sanderson, Coolum
Jacqueline Sanderson is a visual artist who has lived on the Sunshine Coast since 2007. Jacqueline is inspired by nature, people, and the lived experience and she describes herself as an eclectic artist and maker whose artwork is meaningful and good-natured. Jacqueline paints, and creates by reusing and transforming discarded and found objects from nature. She completed her BA in Visual Arts (QUT) in 1995 and is currently completing an undergraduate degree in Psychology at USC. view works

Bodhi Del Mar is a photographer & visual artist working from her home studio on the Gold Coast. Her disciplines include landscape, composite & mixed media photography, cold glass, stencilling and body painting. Her admiration for Mother Nature and love for beautiful spaces that make you “feel good” inspire her work, exploring such themes as the profundity of the natural world and our choices as humans to exist either within or against it. view works

Formed in 2018 wild +parrot brings together the collaborative works of Brisbane based artists Glen Skien and Michelle Wild. Within the collision of discarded materials and collage, their small handmade objects evoke a continual desire to retrieve and re-present new narratives in a series of wearable pieces and small objects. Collectively the response of both artists presents a style and method of storytelling that affords a whimsical and impulsive collection of wearable art pieces. view works

Cindy’s woven sculptural works are designed and created in an outdoor garden studio. Materials are gathered from the nearby forest and scattered through out the garden. Cindy loves exploring nature, as there is so much to see in the bark of a tree, the patterns that form and the way the branches decide to grow. Showcasing the talent of our artist membership from Brisbane and regional Queensland, this exhibition takes the form of small scale three dimensional works displayed on plinths in the foyer space and corridors of level 2 at the Judith Wright Centre.
The Spring Exhibition features works from artist members Jacqueline Sanderson, Bodhi Del Mar, wild + parrot, and Cindy Wood.
Jacqueline Sanderson, Coolum
Jacqueline Sanderson is a visual artist who has lived on the Sunshine Coast since 2007. Jacqueline is inspired by nature, people, and the lived experience and she describes herself as an eclectic artist and maker whose artwork is meaningful and good-natured. Jacqueline paints, and creates by reusing and transforming discarded and found objects from nature. She completed her BA in Visual Arts (QUT) in 1995 and is currently completing an undergraduate degree in Psychology at USC. view works
Bodhi Del Mar, Mudgeeraba
Bodhi Del Mar is a photographer & visual artist working from her home studio on the Gold Coast. Her disciplines include landscape, composite & mixed media photography, cold glass, stencilling and body painting. Her admiration for Mother Nature and love for beautiful spaces that make you “feel good” inspire her work, exploring such themes as the profundity of the natural world and our choices as humans to exist either within or against it. view works
wild + parrot, Brisbane
Formed in 2018 wild +parrot brings together the collaborative works of Brisbane based artists Glen Skien and Michelle Wild. Within the collision of discarded materials and collage, their small handmade objects evoke a continual desire to retrieve and re-present new narratives in a series of wearable pieces and small objects. Collectively the response of both artists presents a style and method of storytelling that affords a whimsical and impulsive collection of wearable art pieces. view works
Cindy Wood, North Tamborine
Cindy’s woven sculptural works are designed and created in an outdoor garden studio. Materials are gathered from the nearby forest and scattered through out the garden. Cindy loves exploring nature, as there is so much to see in the bark of a tree, the patterns that form and the way the branches decide to grow. She attempts to interpret a story of nature and share the beauty of the secrets it holds. view works
