Public and General Liability Insurance and Personal Accident cover is offered to individual and sole trading Visual Artists, Designers, Craft Practitioners, Curators, and Registrars who are engaged in activities related to professional practice. The Accredited Membership and Insurance Policy runs from 1 October to 1 October on a pro rata basis. Join after October and receive a pro rata rate on fees.

Application Rounds & Fees (Cover to 1 October 2025)

Applications are generally received and processed on a monthly basis. Below is a table outlining the upcoming policy start dates, fees (includes membership and insurance) and the closing date for applications for each round. Policies can be taken out outside of these rounds by selected the start immediately option on the form. The link to the online application form is at the bottom of the page.

• Visual artists, designers, craft practitioners, curators, and registrars engaged in activities related to professional practice.
• Installers and Conservators coverage available as well and can be selected in the application form. This is an extension of cover on top of the visual artists, designers, craft practitioners, curators, and registrars cover and does incur an additional fee on the base premium. Optional Extras

Members who use Kilns or Open Flames in the creation of their artwork are required to nominate this extra as part of their application. This extra adds an addition $100.00 onto the base price of membership premium.  The extras are as follows:

• Kilns – Electric or Open Flame Cover
• Open Flame – Jewellery/Iron Work/Glass Work

Working at Heights

Members are allowed to work at heights of up to 15 meters as part of the installers cover. You must disclose to Flying Arts in your application the type of work you will be doing and the equipment used in this work. Coverage is not available at heights over 15 meters. An excess of $1500 will apply to any claims made between 5 to 15 meters.

Cancellation of Membership and Insurance

Members who wish to cancel their policy can do so, however refunds are not available. Please be sure that this is the policy that you are wanting to take out when you put in your application. You must maintain an accredited mebership to use your insurance so cancelling your membership will invalidate your insurance should you wish to continue to use this.

Teaching workshops

This policy extends to include the activities of the Accredited Member when teaching or training adults. Members are now able to teach unlimited workshops to adult students. Where a Member is conducting workshop activities that involve children there is a limit of 12 workshops per year with 10 people per class. Where a Member is engaged as an artist in residence by a school or engaged by local authorities or other organisations where they are working on community projects or training a group/s in arts or crafts, the workshop limits do not apply.

Application Requirements

Joining as an accredited member gives you access to the Flying Arts Artist General Liability Insurance and Personal Accident Cover. For those wanting visual arts cover you will be required to upload the following supporting documents:

1. Statement of Professional Practice (Artist Statement)

For tips for writing your statement of professional practice/artist statement click here. This statement provides a brief summary of your practice. It must be a maximum 250 words, and may include:

• products you produce/ mediums you work in
• themes/creative vision driving your practice
• markets you produce for (commissions, exhibitions, retail etc)
• relevant activities you are undertaking (teaching your craft etc) and how frequent
• what environment you work in (in a studio, from home etc)
• any specific proposed projects you are going to be involved in (ie. The NEIS Program)

2. Curriculum Vitae

For tips on writing your CV click here. The curriculum vitae should provide an up-to-date overview of your practice, and include information such as professional development (education and training), exhibitions, and commissions.

3. Five Digital Images of your work

These images should be small JPEG files detailing the title of the artwork, medium and date produced. There must be a minimum of 5 images otherwise your application will not be accepted.

4. Proof of Professional Practice

This includes a maximum of three relevant catalogues, articles, reviews or promotional material that demonstrates your professional experience. Screenshots of your websites contents are acceptable, however website addresses are not considered documentation. You can provide any documentation here that demonstrates that you have a professional practice.

Assessment Process

Applications for Accredited Membership will be assessed by appointees of the Flying Arts Committee of Management. They will assess your application for evidence of a high level of professional presentation and check that you have met all accreditation requirements. Once these criteria have been met you will be recommended to the Committee to become an ‘Accredited Member’ of Flying Arts. The Committee will make the final decision on your application. To ensure you are covered for any claims arising from incidents/accidents that may have occurred in the past, you must have a current policy. You will not be covered for historical clams if your policy has lapsed.

If a claim is made against an artist it is the policy in place at the date of the claim that will respond to the claim, not the policy in place at the time the work was produced. In the case of Products Liability insurance in particular, it is essential that continuity of cover be maintained until the practice believes that the risks arising from its past work are negligible (notionally 5- 7 years).
