Moranbah

Community Workshops

Our two Artists in Residence, Rebecca Lewis and Rose Rigley were recently hosted through Coalface Art Gallery to facilitate workshops with their community.

Rebecca spent five days in the town teaching the tricks of stop-motion puppet animation to students at Clarke Creek State School, Moranbah State school and young people in the community.

Rose taught two workshops over a weekend, at Moranbah and in Clermont. Sharing her skills with experimental surface treatments on paper – cyanotypes and mono-prints – to adults and young people alike.

About the Artists

Rebecca Lewis

Rebecca (Bec) Lewis is a self-taught textile artist, seamstress, printmaker and collage enthusiast living and working in Ipswich, Queensland.  In 2014, Bec held her first exhibition in Ipswich featuring lino prints of local Houses and has since been exploring ways to use these prints in unusual ways. This exploration is what led Bec to first create outdoor collages and then to stop motion animation. In 2018, Bec was awarded the Digital Art Prize in the Queensland Regional Art Awards for a stop motion film incorporating my lino prints and paper cut outs. Bec loves teaching arts skills  not only because it’s an opportunity to share the things she loves, but for the thrill of watching others experience that little ‘a hah’ moment when they start to realize their own creative potential.

Rose Rigley

Rose Rigley is Cairns-based artist and arts educator. She is best known for her artist books, sculptural assemblages and installation works. Her current focus connects memory, ordinary objects and repetitive processes in a liminal search for the everyday Sublime. “My work seeks to find the way that objects and language can link us to our past and find the universal in the personal”, she says. “I believe that common materials are the best reciprocals of recollection.” Rigley has exhibited on a local, national and international level and is part of the Visual Art teaching team at TAFE Queensland, (Cairns Campus).
