As part of the prize for winning the Art For Life Award at the 2025 Queensland Regional Art Awards (QRAA), Alison McDonald presents a two-week solo exhibition at Flying Arts titled ‘Progressions’.
Alison’s exhibition is a continuation of her ongoing engagement with copper, taking inspiration from the seaweed collected by Annie Slade in 1884, which is now held within the British Marine Algae Collection at JCU Special Collections.
Each piece emerges from close observation of textures, patterns and structures found in seaweed, moss, lichen and rock. Using techniques such as chasing and repoussé, metal is reshaped into intricate forms. Progressions invites reflection on the complexity of nature, and our role within it.
The exhibition will run from 25 June – 8 July. Our gallery is open Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, and Friday 9am to 3pm.
Alison’s winning work of the Art for Life award is ‘For Annie Slade’ (2025). This work is currently on tour across the state as part of the QRAA Touring Exhibition (locations here).
