If biophilia means the love of books, archivist and architect Ray Coffey is the Don Juan of Australian Art ephemera. From humble beginnings, first purchasing a book on boats in his 20s while commuting home from work, Ray’s love for publications soon extended to an impressive collection which outgrew his suburban Brisbane home.
Today, Ray’s purpose-built library hosts one of the most extensive private collections of modern and contemporary Australian art ephemera, which serves as a treasure trove for art institutions and enthusiasts alike.
Ray and Dianne Coffey graciously opened the doors to their home and library on Saturday 29 May to Flying Arts 500 Club donors, key partners and art ambassadors for a very special event.
Guests were treated to a memorable sit down conversation with Ray, led by our valued board member, art valuer and researcher, Bruce Heiser. It was fascinating to hear about the dedication and resources that Ray has invested into his “beautiful obsession,” along with the fascinating tales and coincidences which have resulted in his extraordinary collection.
The afternoon, filled with delectable canapes, beverages and exploration of Ray’s library, was to thank the generous support of our Flying Arts’ 500 Club – a valued group of donors who significantly help us grow our programs and services that support established, emerging and aspiring artists, young people and communities across Queensland.
For 50 years, Flying Arts has fostered and maintained an extensive network of members, participants, audiences, clients, collaborators and supporters. Our programs and services have assisted many participants to become successful artists, arts educators and cultural leaders in their communities. Donations from the 500 Club help us to continue forming these essential connections with isolated regional and remote Queensland communities and facilitating their access to visual arts activities and programs.
