Workshop Title: Inspiring Students to Write

Tutor: Harry Laing

Workshop Summary: This Professional Development workshop is designed to help English teachers build confidence in teaching creative writing. Many teachers will admit to needing help with this subject, particularly around poetry. A hands-on practical workshop, ‘Inspiring Students To Write’ asks teachers to participate in a wide variety of games and exercises which students have been shown to respond well to. This way, teachers discover what students can really do. Creative writing can become formulaic when teachers are not confident of what they’re doing. They will be surprised and pleased to discover there are many things they can do ‘off’ the formula and away from the blackline master. The workshop also includes some voice work, useful for teachers when presenting and reading out examples of writing.

Workshop Title: Get Writing

Tutor: Harry Laing

Workshop Summary: A workshop designed to inspire students to write as much as possible. Students will be challenged to produce high quality work and to surprise themselves with what they do. Beginning with freeing-up techniques, the workshop allows students’ imaginations free play and encourages adventurous writing in whatever form. Strong and vivid pieces of writing are read out to create different moods and atmospheres which students can respond to. Students are encouraged to read out and share their work. The importance of hearing what they and their peers are capable of can’t be overestimated. Outcomes include having several pieces of writing to take home and ideas to develop further. An anthology can be produced and depending on the time available, a performance of students’ work organized for other school members/ teachers/ parents. Above all students will enjoy themselves and some might be amazed to find that writing can be fun.
