Silver Smithing and Jewellery
Workshop Title:Jewellery - Beginners
Tutor: Madeleine Brown
Workshop Summary: Participants will create a pendant and a ring in silver, while learning the basic skills of the jeweler: saw piercing, filing, drilling, soldering with an LPG torch, polishing etc. Different texturing and finishing techniques will be taught, such as reticulation (melted metal), hammering and stamping. Participants will learn skills that they can apply using simple materials and tools to making jewellery in the future.

Workshop Title: Jewellery Decoration
Tutor: Margot Douglas
Workshop Summary: Textures, surface decoration and patinas have the ability to create pieces of jewellery with distinct design features. Participants will explore options and make samples, prior to design and make a piece of jewellery using cold connection methods of wrapping, coiling, linking, riveting or threading, which will incorporate an objects of significance to participant.

Workshop Title: Wax Carving Beginner
Tutor: Madeleine Brown
Workshop Summary: In this workshop students will learn to carve and form jeweler’s wax, using files, drills and hot tools. These wax models can be later sent by students to a casting house to be cast into silver or other metals.

Workshop Title: Forming and Folding Workshop
Tutor: Margot Douglas
Workshop Summary: • Studio Etiquette and Workplace Safety. • Introduction to materials, equipment and soldering technique. • Explore surface decoration/ textures - make several samples prior to selecting a technique on their jewellery piece. • Participants will receive tuition in process of design / construction / finishing of a piece. • Practical considerations. • Details of material suppliers.

Workshop Title: Stone Setting
Tutor: Mauri Maunsell
Workshop Summary:This workshop will cover the basic principles of stone setting. Students will begin with a rub-over bezel for a round stone which is the simplest form of setting. This setting can then be used in a creation of the student’s choice, such as a ring or pendant etc. This course can be adapted for those with basic stone setting skills who wish to explore other ways to mount stones such as wire basket settings, tapered collets (settings) an others.

Workshop Title: Introductory Silversmithing
Tutor: Mauri Maunsell
Workshop Summary:This course will cover the techniques and processes for the confident fabrication of jewellery. Participants will be introduced to the use of tools and basic techniques such as sawing, filing, forming of metal, polishing and methods of hard silver soldering. The workshop will cover basic ring construction and other forms of ring fabrication. Students can expect to complete several rings and attain a level of confidence in soldering.

Workshop Title: Intermediate Jewellery
Tutor: Madeleine Brown
Workshop Summary: Participants will design and create one or two pieces of jewellery, featuring semi-precious set stones. Participants should already possess basic jeweler’s skills such as sawing and soldering. This workshop will allow for a more advanced item of the student’s own design to be created. Students can learn to set cabochon (flat-bottomed) stones, or use alternative materials (shells, plastics, found objects etc).
