Workshop Summary: This workshop is designed for studios that do not possess a high pressure hose or exposure bed for traditional screen printing emulsion based image creation. Stenciling has become a very contemporary art form. Graffiti artists, painters and printmakers have all embraced this diverse technique which can be printed onto fine art paper, MDF, fabric or existing items of clothing. A non toxic process which involves cutting stencils using easy cut or paper to produce multicolour prints on to a variety of experimental surfaces. Transparency, colour mixing and registration will be demonstrated and all students will leave with the capacity to maintain this practice in their own studios and schools. The workshop is designed to be open ended enough to allow an experimental approach. Integration of drawing and stenciling (cross media) will also be encouraged. Participants will leave with a number of resolved prints on a variety of exploratory surfaces.
Audience: Secondary School, Young Persons, Adult

Workshop Title: Making a Mark
Tutor:Carolyn McKenzie-Craig
Workshop Summary: A creative approach to etching which introduces ideas of mark making on the plate and demonstrates advanced techniques. Participants will explore line (both etched and dry point) and tones (through aquatint) as well as more painterly techniques such as sugar lift. The use of multi plates, chine colle, a la poupe and other creative inking techniques will be shown. Participants will leave with an editioned image and a suite of experimental prints onto a variety of surfaces. Plates will be etched with the less toxic Edinburgh etch using zinc.
Audience: Secondary School (maximum 12 students), Adult

Workshop Title:Chip Away - Relief Printing with Linocuts
Tutor: Carolyn McKenzie-Craig
Workshop Summary: The workshop will cover transfer methods, cutting techniques and an over view of contemporary relief printing practices. The idea of the multiples will be explored and different printing surfaces will be experimented with. Students will be taught how to print with a hand barren and if available an etching or relief press will also be demonstrated. Methods of introducing colour (chine collle, application of inks and dies) and inverting a plate to print as an intaglio is instructed. Participants will leave with a number of resolved prints from the one plate.

Workshop Title:Mapping of Place
Tutor: Jill O'Sullivan
Workshop Summary: This workshop can be approached in differing techniques, 1. Those that do not require a press i.e. relief, collographs, monotypes, or stencils 2. With a press, etching techniques including aquatint, sugar lift, dry point, chine-collé etc. This is suitable for more experienced printmakers. Though an exploration and application of printmaking techniques this workshop will explore and develop the ways you may portray your particular place and or region through conceptual mapping or chorographical approaches. Your creative interpretations, through image and perhaps text will evoke and conceptually map the inherent and iconic features of your place or location. This narrative mapping may include one or more physical, symbolic, metaphysical or sensory attributes pertaining to your perceptions of your place. Artist books may be included in your image making.
Audience: Secondary School, Young Persons, Adult, Seniors

Workshop Title:Waterless Lithography
Tutor: Marguerite du Fondaumiere
Workshop Summary: This is an introduction to waterless lithography, creating an image on an aluminum plate and printing using safe and non-toxic materials and methods. Students will learn how to complete a small edition of hand pulled original prints. Finished prints can later be incorporated into mixed media work or stand on their own. In waterless lithography silicone is used as the protector of the non-image areas. The ink is attracted only to the image areas. Waterless lithography is easy, cleaner, cheaper and more versatile than the traditional processes. Very much like traditional lithography the process is quite sensitive but it is not as complicated.
Audience: Secondary School, Young People, Adult, Seniors

Workshop Title: Investigating Monotype
Tutor: Marguerite du Fondaumiere
Workshop Summary: This course will introduce and explore basic printing techniques developed by Paul Gauguin called trace monotype. This is a very easy process and consists of inking a surface, layering paper over it and drawing over the surface to receive the ink in a linear manner. Paul Klee also used this method for his drawings. Only one strong impression can be taken using oil based inks in a low toxicity environment (vegetable oil clean up). We will also explore possibilities for the use of chine collé (collage) with rice and mulberry papers. Students will be encouraged in a supportive atmosphere and will learn to develop a series of prints through experimentation using painting and printmaking techniques. No printing press is needed.
Audience: Primary School, Secondary School, Young People, Adult, Seniors
