Workshop Title: Drawing for Beginners

Workshop summary: Drawing is a great way to learn to 'see'. It can be the foundation for further art making or an art form in itself. This workshop will begin with the basic principles of tone, form, line and mark making using structured exercises and will then work towards individual expression. At the end of the workshop the participants will have a good understanding of tone and form and will be able to continue on their own, furthering their insight in these elements. Usually all students finish one or more impressive tonal drawings.

Workshop Title: Expressive Drawing Strategies

Workshop summary: This workshop aims to introduce students to a variety of drawing strategies with the focus on improving drawing and observational skills. By initially drawing a still life with graphite, students will be encouraged to observe closely using structural analysis and analytical techniques to achieve form and depth in their drawing. After demonstrations by the tutor, students will experiment with different drawing media e.g. ink, charcoal, graphite, on coloured grounds and with watery paint on white paper to begin several works. Students will be encouraged to develop these works using strategies to express and communicate feeling and meaning in their drawings.

Workshop Summary: Participants who have spent many happy hours life drawing but are wondering where to go next will benefit from this masterclass, which is designed to stimulate ideas and to develop new approaches for working with the figure in different media. Workshop Title: Botanical Drawing with Watercolour Pencils

Workshop summary: After sourcing and discussing subject matter from nearby gardens or bushland, workshop participants will sharpen their drawing skills and experiment with watercolour pencil effects, completing several small and one A4 botanical drawing. A nature lover’s workshop! A reasonable level of patience and attention to detail is required, plus an average drawing ability. Recently sourced specimens may be brought along if preferred (eg. seedpods, potted plants, fruit/veg with stems and leaves attached) Botanical drawing is very relaxing, both to do and enjoy later.

Workshop Title: An Introduction to Scratch Art

Workshop summary: This workshop will introduce participants with drawing experience to the technique of scratchboard (a.k.a. scraper-board). Scratchboard is an excellent technique for creating fur and feathers and can also be used in colour. Each workshop will begin with a short overview of the scratchboard media, how it is used by different artists, and the different tools and materials involved. For the short (1/2-day) workshops, we will work on black scratchpaper and explore the creation and representation of different textures and subjects through the creation of a small piece. Participants in the longer workshops (1-2 days) will experiment with various tools (sandpaper, wire brushes, etc.) and different methods for applying ink and colour. Depending on length, students may expect to complete 1-2 small final pieces. Regardless of length, these workshops will encourage participants to interact and learn from each other’s experiences.
