The artists listed in this section have experience working in schools and have designed workshops specifically for primary and secondary students. All artists working in schools have blue card clearances. Though Flying Arts workshops are normally designed to run over two days, shorter and longer workshops may be possible. Teachers are encouraged to work with other schools in the area to share days and cut travelling costs and also to consider engaging multiple artists. Funding may be available to regional and remote schools through the Priority Country Area Program. Contact Education Queensland for details. PRIMARY LEVEL PS Drawing and PaintingRebecca BerrettChildren’s picture books: design and illustrate a dummy rough (Foundations) Unravel the mysteries of Children’s Picture Book design and illustration. Bring along a story to illustrate. Working initially from a storyboard, expand upon your ideas to create a 32-page dummy rough. The workshop will cover sequencing, pagination, varying the viewpoint, book design conventions, and illustration possibilities. Download the outline here. Cartoon funshop Cartooning Shena Hayden Young artists drawing and painting workshop (Foundations) In this fun workshop young artists will learn creative and exciting ways to develop painting and drawing skills: basic techniques such as colour mixing, palette knife, brush application, and composition using still life and the environment as well as imagination to create unique artworks to take home and proudly hang on the wall. Ramona Cavanagh Your wall, your story, your image (Foundations) Make a unique public artwork based on your school or community group’s activities, history, the surrounding environment or participant’s opinions and feelings. Pamela Denise The big picture: mural painting (Foundations) This mural painting workshop is designed to celebrate a sense of self and place.The mural designed on site by a group through a design process facilitated by the artist, then painted by participants.Download the workshop outline here. Damien Kamholtz Painted bridges (Foundations) This is a community project-based workshop in which children create collaborative artworks with children from another country or community. Sharon Muir Painting from nature (Foundations) Capture your individual responses to the natural world through a progression of stimulating exercises inspired by the textures, forms and colours found in nature. Multi-artform Valerie Keenan Another kind of museum (Foundations) Draw from the monuments of your ancestors to create an artwork that is a response to the way you connect to the history that surrounds you. You will meet at a local cemetery, an old mill, smelter or other historic landmark and consider the visual impact of this museum of our families. You will then move to a studio environment and translate this information into one of more artworks, in the media of your choice. Download the workshop outline here. Material representations of history (Foundations) Journey back in time into the history of your landscape to create an artwork that is a response to the way you connect to the people, places and environments that surround you. Participants are asked to bring in an object or objects that have connections to a memory or place, to their youth or family connections, eg photo, letter, keepsake, curio, artefact etc. Create artworks in media of your choice. Mixed Media Thought to reality Mixed media Use visual language to tell your own story. Learn how to understand symbology, use colour, layout and positioning principles and explain your story in the finished piece. A smorgasbord of techniques and approaches will cater for all skill levels. Demonstrations and exercises will familiarise participants with the media, culminating in at least one complete large work. Using these skills, they will create a clay animation sequence that is a reflection of their interests, skills, talents and life experiences. Ceramics Julia Bell Mosaic madness (Foundations) Participants will learn to create basic skills to create colourful mosaics. Individual pieces can be created to take home. Puppetry Wanda Bennett Playing with puppets: body shield puppetry (Foundations)Aimed at primary school students, this workshop is an introduction to large-scale mask-making, movement and performance skills. Using recycled cardboard and newspaper as a base the students will create body size masks, with exaggerated 3D features. The finished mask is then “played” with and different methods of movement are explored. Download the workshop outling here. Playing with puppets: shadow puppetry (Foundations)Working in small groups participants will choose a story for their shadow performance. This “basic story” (approx. 3 – 5 minutes) may be taken from a book, a poem or may be created from the students’ imagination. After creating puppets the stories are then narrated or performed to music. Participants need basic scissor skills. Download the workshop outling here. Giant puppet workshop (Foundations)Learn the basics of making large processional puppets or other creatures using a variety of techniques. The workshop incorporates different ideas and methods for creating characters and props. Sculpture/3D Wanda Bennett Earth works: creations using natural materials (Foundations) Using natural “found” materials participants will create temporary and permanent pieces of artwork. Basic weaving and construction skills will be taught and students will be encouraged to “Play” with an assortment of natural materials – vines, leaves, stones, soil, flowers, bamboo, string, shells etc. Download the workshop outling here. Woven story (Foundations) Using an assortment of materials – cane, fabric, handmade paper, local grasses etc, participants will use basic weaving skills to produce a small woven article. Through use of colour, texture and text participants will be encouraged to make their finished article a “memento” representative of a special time, place or personal story. Shena Hayden Amazing imaginative sculptural creatures in papier mache (Foundations) Explore the wonders of creative 3D forms using the marvellous construction material of papier mache. Learn to manipulate and build imaginative creatures and interesting forms using paper, card, wire and tape. Build an imaginative three dimensional creature, an exotic bird, and an acrobatic figure. Damien Kamholtz Box construction (Foundations) This is a very simple workshop based on the premise that if you give a child a toy, it is a toy, but if you give a child a cardboard box, it can become an infinite number of things. And when you give a large number of children hundreds of cardboard boxes, the possibilities for creativity are endless…Download the workshop outline here. Tamara Kirby Secret space hideaways (Foundations) Casselle Mountford Adopt-a-tree: woven environmental sculpture (Foundations) An environmental workshop introducing participants to a range of tactile materials and weaving techniques. The workshop will culminate in a tree dressing celebration as trees are decorated with woven nests and sculptures created during the day. Download the workshop outline here. NANCY BROWN Patterning and printing on textiles Printmaking This workshop shows school groups how to create patterns and print them in tessellated designs onto textiles. Students will observe, draw, cut and create their own designs around a theme, for example plants and animals, which can be printed as individual pieces on shirts or bags or as a class banner project. Nancy can teach a variety of printing techniques, including blockprinting and lino carving. Download the workshop outline here. Tamara Kirby Spontaneous impressions (Foundations) Explore basic printmaking principles through lino cutting and collagraphic techniques. Participants will work towards a collaborative storybook using spontaneous text and image and will also take home prints of their own work. Download the workshop outline here. Turn paper into books (Foundations) This workshop will allow participants to make a simple range of books so that each participant has something complete to take home. These books look more complicated than expected, giving participants a great sense of achievement. Download the workshop outline here. Grant Hodges Flying origami (Foundations) Learn how to make your own plane using the ancient art of origami. You will be every teacher’s worst nightmare as your planes will fly higher and faster than ever before! Prove your champion plane building skills in a competition at the end of the activity. SECONDARY LEVEL SS Drawing and Painting The surface and beyond (Foundations) A painting workshop with some mixed media which challenges participants to think of paintings not only as windows on some aspect of the world but also as objects in their own right. Use a contemporary abstract style to interpret aspects of your surroundings. Investigate several approaches including gestural mark-making, combinations of opaque and thinned colours/tones, impasto, and alternative methods of applying paint. Working from natural objects and photographs, explore the dry media of artist quality pastels and charcoal, experimenting with a variety of techniques in a relaxed and stimulating environment. Julie McEnerny Botanical drawing with watercolour pencils (Foundations) After sourcing and discussing subject mater from nearby gardens or bushland, workshop participants will sharpen their skills and discover the many possible effects of watercolour pencils, completing several postcard sized and at least one A3 botanical drawing. COLOUR THEORY Sharon Muir Learn how to mix the colour you want every time, using the double primary mixing system. The colour wheel and the most commonly used colour schemes will be gradually introduced with the aim of developing a strong foundation in the understanding and use of colour. MIXED MEDIA Robert Andrews Experiment with mixed media using collage and found objects to create works that explore the boundaries between 2D and 3D art. Several genres can be interpreted during the workshop, including versions of still life, portrait, figure in the environment and/or landscape. Participants will also be encouraged to use experimental drawing techniques. Ramona Cavanagh Use visual language to tell your own story. Adrienne Fleming Create a set of mixed media postcards featuring images of personal significance in a variety of techniques that document “where and how you live”. PHOTOGRAPHY Ronita Neal The workshop will explore the basic technical and artistic skills needed to make a great photograph. Learn the common mistakes people make, the basics of how to compose a photo to have impact and how to “see” what will make a good photograph. Discuss how to choose cameras and equipment relevant to the type of photos you like to take. Taking your photography further: refining your photography techniques (Foundations) Use the more advanced features of the camera, as well as technical and artistic issues. Undertake a project using these insights and your vision to push the boundaries of your work. Judy Parrott Participants will tell the story of their place through sensory responses to their environment. The course teaches elements of composition and design to develop skills for taking better photographs, and focuses on using photography to develop the art of seeing. The workshop will finish with a creative writing or oral story-telling piece about sense of place, based on the photographs taken. FILM
Di Ball Digital imaging and manipulation (Foundations) This workshop will demystify digital imaging and introduce participants to the basic tools used in photo manipulation. Resolution, pixel, masking, layering and other basics will be explored to give a good foundation in digital imaging. Jillian Dawson Tell your story digitally. Each workshop participant will research, write and create a DVD of their personal story using digital photos, voice overs and short video clips. A great way to pass on your family history. Film clips (Foundations) For all those lovers of music, this film workshop will explore the phenomenon of the film clip culture, from country to rock. Participants will discuss and study a variety of film clips, then work in small groups to write, act and film their own film clip. Each group will receive a DVD copy of their clip. GLASS Deb Cocks Experiment with painting on flat glass and glass vessels using traditional techniques and fired-on enamels. Participants will be encouraged to find imagery and textures in the world around them and to translate these onto glass. Designing, firing cycles, OH&S and glass properties will also be covered.

Claire Locker Create a unique teapot using different forming techniques, textured slabs, coils, patterns and stencils. Each teapot will be painted with bright underglaze colours, glazed in a shiny clear glaze and fired. Plenty of support material available.

SCULPTURE/3D Maria Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan Husband and wife team* Alfredo and Maria Isabel Aquilizan guide your group in an installation workshop touching on the concept of memory; its relation to object and identity; the idea of space; and art as a process of collaboration. For example, you work with plaster of paris, using old shoes as molds to create a collective ephemeral installation. This workshop can also be oriented towards developing concepts for site-specific public art or other projects designed to suit the needs of the community. Documenting the products with photography is integral to the art form, as is returning the environment to its former state. Casselle Mountford Using various natural materials, participants will create a 3D free standing or suspended fantasy creature. The workshop will introduce participants to a range of construction methods, weaving techniques and materials.
TEXTILES NANCY BROWN Plant dyeing, collage and exploring with textiles Textile Fiona Wright Learn the techniques needed to depict a “special place” in felt. Look at the nuts and bolts of creating masterpieces in nuno felt, as well as dyeing wool and silk, techniques of producing a nuno felt, printing onto the surface, stitching and using it to work some pieces reflecting special places. Available May – June; August Sumptuous surfaces in felt (Foundations) Combine wool and silk to make rich sumptuous ‘fabrics’ using simple techniques based on felting. The workshop covers dying wool and silk, printing techniques to add another layer to the pieces, and explores metal foils and colour combining possibilities to build up rich layers in these fabrics. Machine embroidery inspired by Hundertwasser and Klee (Masterclass) Participants will develop their own designs inspired by the masters of colour and line, Hundertwasser and Klee. This workshop lends itself to working fast and small – postcard size – to try out ideas. The workshop covers dyeing silks, effects such as layering, stitching, and cutting back of sheer fabrics.
Kirsten Ingemar Discover the amazing colours attainable from local flora. Learn to dye natural fibres with a variety of plant materials and a minimum of chemicals. Create intricate designs and patterns on fabric with simple shibori techniques. Together the group will create a small colour catalogue of plants used in the workshop for future reference. Plant dyeing, collage and exploring with textiles (Foundations) Christine Yarker Make your own fabulous fabric hats using traditional millinery techniques. This is a beginning pattern making and construction course, giving participants instruction on how to draft patterns and construct hats. Participants should be able to create at least two unique hats that not only look great but fit perfectly. Available July – September Gorgeous trimmings for hats, bags and clothing (Foundations) This workshop is entirely devoted to trimmings and the wonderful effects that can be achieved using ribbons, fabrics, feathers, veiling and more. From silk and ribbon roses and bows to curling and cutting feathers into shape, participants will be encouraged to experiment with combinations and start to build their own library of ideas that can be used as a resource for future projects.
PRINTMAKING Nancy Brown Printing on textiles (Foundations) Learn how to screenprint from hand cut stencils and photographic emulsion. Create repeat patterns from lino blocks and collagraphs and print them onto cotton, patchwork pieces, bags and shirts. Create colourful community banners with your own designs and create sun prints from found objects onto fully washable fabrics. TAMARA KIRBY Wendy McGrath Combine drawing, photographs, objects and personal symbols to produce contemporary interpretations of landscape with photopolymer printmaking in non-toxic printmaking mediums. Produce a final etching using photopolymer etching plates and UV light and water to develop the etching plate.
