Cartoon funshop Cartooning PS SS
Brian Doyle draws on the whiteboard non-stop, demonstrating his professional cartoon clues, inviting participants to draw with him. Participants are encouraged to use their ‘silly brains’ and learn that there are no rules to cartooning. Drawing for beginners
Drawing is a great way to learn to ‘see’. It can be the foundation for further art making or an art form in itself. Use oriental brush and ink, charcoal, conté or pencil to capture a moment in time or a quality of light. A painting workshop (with some mixed media) which challenges participants to think of paintings not only as windows on some aspect of the world but also as objects in their own right. Participants are encouraged to use a contemporary abstract style to interpret aspects of their surroundings. Several approaches and painting techniques will be investigated and used, including gestural mark-making, combinations of opaque and thinned colours/tones, impasto, and alternative methods of applying paint. Develop confidence with using colour by learning how to mix the colour you want every time, using the double primary mixing system. The colour wheel and the most commonly used colour schemes will be gradually introduced, with the aim of developing a strong foundation in the understanding and use of colour. Experience is gained through practical hands on sessions using coloured paper and paint. This workshop is open to anyone interested in colour and applicable to any medium. In this workshop presentation participants will learn the full range of considerations necessary to secure and complete a commission for a public artwork. The workshop includes publicity and promotion; designing for public spaces; materials, construction, conservation and safety; and finances, contracts and copyright. Draw from the monuments of your ancestors to create an artwork that is a response to the way you connect to the history that surrounds you. Participants will meet at a local cemetery* and consider the visual impact of this museum of our families. They will then move to a studio environment and translate this information into one of more artworks that are a response to their visit, in media of choice. * The location could also be an old mill, smelter, or other historic landmark. Journey back in time into the history of your landscape to create an artwork that is a response to the way you connect to the people, places and environments that surround you. Participants are asked to bring in an object or objects that have connections to a memory or place, to their youth or family connections, eg photo, letter, keepsake, curio, artefact etc. They will create artworks in media of their choice. A mixed media workshop that encourages participants to experiment with the use of collage and found objects to create works that explore the boundaries between 2D and 3D art. Several genres can be interpreted during the workshop, including versions of still life, portrait, figure in the environment and/or landscape. Introduction to photography: the secrets of taking a great photograph A SS

The workshop will explore the basic technical and artistic skills needed to make a great photograph. You will learn the common mistakes people make, the basics of how to compose a photo to have impact and how to “see” what will make a good photograph. We will discuss how to choose cameras and equipment relevant to the type of photos participants would like to take. Film clips A SS

For all those lovers of music, this film workshop will explore the phenomenon of the film clip culture, from country to rock. Participants will discuss and study a variety of film clips, then work in small groups to write, act and film their own film clip. Each group will receive a DVD copy of their clip. Introduction to clay animation SS PS

Participants will learn and develop skills in sculpture with clay, concept development, set and prop construction and frame by frame animation. Using these skills, they will create a clay animation sequence that is a reflection of their interests, skills, talents and life experiences. The animation productions can be showcased as a video installation or premiere night. Materials: the tutor can provide at cost price one animation suite and some other materials and resources for $20 per student + freight charges. Glass and Silversmithing

JUDITH BOHM-PARR

Warm glass or fusing and slumping

Fusing – joining pieces of glass together by melting them in a kiln ending in a flat piece of “fused” glass. Slumping – using a mold to shape a piece of glass or previously “fused” piece of glass to make things like bowls or plates. Kiln casting – creating a three dimensional figure by melting pieces or crushed glass mold in the kiln.

Level 1: Beginners A

Level 2: Intermediate A

Turn a flat fused piece of glass into a bowl or plate. Learn how to texture glass, use crushed glass, powdered glass, simple moulds for glass slumping. Introduction to glass beadmaking Jewellery
This class is an introduction to the art of glass beadmaking.  Safety issues are covered and then an introduction to glass properties and the glass that is used. Basic techniques are demonstrated and then practised by the student to learn to make a glass bead and decorate it.  Demostrations are run throughout the class with an emphasis on correct techniques. Glass beadmaking – intermediate Jewellery
This class is a follow on from the beginners class – with more techniques demonstrated and practised and an introduction to different materials including the use of silver foil, some of the handmade reactive colours in the Moretti and Vetrofond soft glass range.  Use of bead presses and some basic bead decorations. Participants will be introduced to silversmithing tools and basic techniques such as sawing, filing, soldering, polishing and piercing. Intermediate silversmithing Silversmithing
This course is designed for those with some level of expertise who wish to explore other methods of making jewellery. Topics include: stone setting; ring making techniques such as box rings or round hollow rings; modelling; and carving in wax for casting into jewellery or for those who wish to develop their own pieces. Metal bead making A

Beads can be made in many ways and many different materials. This workshop will enable students to make their own unique handcrafted and handmade metal beads from many materials and I many diverse methods. Participants will investigate different versions and forms of metal beads such as double domed, square, rectangular and fused beads and various methods of decorating such as fusing, fold forming, reticulating (surface melting) and piercing and overlaid or appliquéd layers of metal. This workshop will introduce the fun and unpredictability of throwing with coloured clay. Participants will learn easy methods to mix coloured clays and techniques for altering the pattern will be explored. Create a unique teapot using different forming techniques, textured slabs, coils, patterns and stencils. Puppetry

WANDA BENNETT

Playing with puppets: body shield puppetry PS

This workshop is aimed at primary school students and is a fantastic introduction to large-scale mask-making, movement and performance skills. Using recycled cardboard and newspaper as a base the students will create body size masks, with exaggerated 3D features. The finished mask is then “played” with and different methods of movement are explored. Playing with puppets: shadow puppetry PS

Working in small groups participants will choose a basis story for their shadow performance. This “story” (approx. 3 – 5 minutes) may be taken from a book, a poem or may be created from the students’ imagination. After creating puppets the stories are then narrated or performed to music. Giant puppet workshop A SS PS CP FSE

Using a variety of techniques participants will be taught the basics of making large processional puppets or other creatures. The workshop will incorporate different ideas and methods for creating characters and props. Project be-longing: portraits (Community project) SS CP FSE

Husband and wife team* Alfredo and Maria Isabel Aquilizan will guide a group of participants in an installation workshop that touches on the concept of memory, its relation to object and identity, the idea of space, and art as a process of collaboration. For example, participants will work with plaster of Paris, using old shoes as molds to create a collective ephemeral installation. This workshop can also be oriented towards developing concepts for site-specific public or other projects designed to suit the specific needs of the community. This is a series of workshops designed to give an introduction to “making for performance”. The classes will cover simple techniques useful for making lanterns, puppets, environmental sculpture, costumes and props. Using an assortment of materials – cane, fabric, handmade paper, local grasses etc, participants will use basic weaving skills to produce a small woven article. Silk painting, dyeing, patterning and printing SS
During this course, participants will learn about creating designs, using silk painting techniques, batik and other resists, as well as shibori folding and dyeing. Participants will create their own amazing patterns on silk scarves and silk pieces, then learn how to set the dyes and silk paints so that they are washable. Create a distinctively unique garment using a fine tissue silk and modifying its surface with wool and silk fibres.  This workshop will explore the fine laying out of wool fibre, the use of silk fibre on its surface, and the nuno felting technique.  The resulting fabric is then stitched together into a light filmy garment. Fine felt with a glow A

Make a lovely fine light fabric with the cosiness of wool and the strength of silk.  Using a process developed by the artist which uses silk cap and fine micron merino wool, and looks at how to extract and extend silk cap in order to lay it out, and a simple method for laying out wool finely.  The resultant fabrics could be made into a small garment or incorporated into a larger piece. Felt Inspirations A SS

Drawing inspiration from a place special to us we will learn the techniques needed to depict it in felt. We will look at the nuts and bolts of creating our masterpieces in nuno felt. Dyeing wool and silk, techniques of producing a nuno felt, printing onto the surface, stitch and use it to work some pieces reflecting special places. Available May – June; August. Sumptuous surfaces in felt A SS

Using simple techniques based on felting we will combine wool and silk to make rich sumptuous ‘fabrics’. These fabrics are ideal to use in art quilts and garments. We will cover dying wool and silk, a number of printing techniques to add another layer to the pieces, explore the possibilities of metal foils and the colour combining possibilities to build up rich layers in these fabrics. Make your own fabulous fabric hats using traditional millinery techniques. This is a beginning pattern making and construction course, giving participants instruction on how to draft patterns and construct hats.  Participants should be able to create at least two unique hats that not only look great but fit perfectly. Gorgeous trimmings for hats, bags and clothing A SS

This workshop is entirely devoted to trimmings and the wonderful effects that can be achieved using ribbons, fabrics, feathers, veiling and more. From silk and ribbon roses and bows to curling and cutting feathers into shape, participants will be encouraged to experiment with combinations and start to build their own library of ideas that can be used as a resource for future projects. Patterning and printing on textiles PS SS
This workshop shows school groups how to create patterns and print them in tessellated designs onto textiles. Students will observe, draw, cut and create their own designs around a theme, for example plants and animals, which can be printed as individual pieces on shirts or bags or as a class banner project. Printing on textiles A SS

Learn how to screenprint from hand cut stencils and photographic emulsion. Create repeat patterns from lino blocks and collagraphs and print them onto cotton, patchwork pieces, bags and shirts. Create colourful community banners with your own designs and create sun prints from found objects onto fabrics that are fully washable. Layering the landscape A SS

In this workshop participants will combine drawing, photographs, objects and personal symbols to produce contemporary interpretations of landscape with photopolymer printmaking. The workshop is an introduction to non-toxic printmaking incorporating mediums such as collage, drawing, found objects and photographic media to produce a final etching using photopolymer etching plates. This process uses UV light and water to develop an etching plate, with emphasis on safe and environmentally friendly studio practice.
