Flying Arts 2008 Artists’ Retreat has been set for 24-30 August, at the Daradgee Environmental Education Centre near Innisfail. Two acclaimed artists, Judy Holding and David Frazer will lead this year’s retreat in far North Queensland. Flying Arts 2008 Regional Art Awards
The Regional Art Awards competition is open only to REGIONAL Queensland and northern New South Wales residents. It excludes artists currently residing in the Brisbane City Council area and south of Armidale in New South Wales. This year’s Regional Art Awards will be held online only, due to unforeseen circumstances. Entries including images, paperwork must be received by Flying Arts by 29 August 2008. The final draft of the conditions of entry will be available online soon.

New Show for Regional Galleries: Touring Digital Exhibition – Inter View
Curated by Robb Kelly from Raw Space Galleries, this compact touring exhibition features digital stories by four regional Queensland artists: Di Ball, Jenny Fraser, Tina Gonsalves and Natalie Woodlock. The films are provided in DVD format and display equipment is available for hire. Inter View is available now. Workshops and artists talks are also available to accompany the exhibition (refer to the “Film” section in this program booklet). Inter View costs $880 inc GST + equipment hire if necessary.  Book Now!

Five SensesWith the support of Arts Queensland and the Federal Government through VACS (Visual Art and Craft Strategy) we will be holding a showcase exhibition in Brisbane in 2008. Artists have been asked to contribute works which make reference to their Five Senses and to promote those characteristics which are distinctive to their place in Queensland. The resulting exhibition is focused around five themes: loss, destruction, rejuvenation, growth, restoration. Selections have been made and the show at the State Library opens 6 November and runs for four weeks.

Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Film, TV and New Media [previously called the Minister’s Awards]. TheCreative Generation Excellence Awards in the Arts 2008 program recognises and celebrates talented students in the senior years of schooling. It rewards them with the opportunity to attend workshops in Brisbane with highly respected artists in a program specific to their art form. The challenging workshops will recognise the breadth of artistic experiences across a wide variety of contexts, genres and styles within each art form. Workshop dates: Sunday 3 August – Saturday 9 August SUBMISSION PROCESS: Year 12 state school students should forward a nomination form along with a portfolio of evidence and DVD footage to show their artistic endeavour. Rockhampton Art Gallery: Forging Ahead, until 8 June – the final showing of this well-travelled Flying Arts exhibition. For the opening of this exhibition, leading artists and tutor, Lisa Gaze was present and spoke about the workshops and artists involved.  Program coordinator Sarah Barron attended and wished to thank Elva and all the helpful staff at the gallery. Ocean to outback: Australian landscape paintings1850-1950 20 June 2008 - 27 July 2008 This exhibition documents the most dynamic century of landscape painting from the colonial 1850’s to the immediate period following World War II. Over this century, landscape painting was the "great" subject of Australian art. This fascination and love of the Australian landscape continues to this day. This is a National Gallery of Australia Traveling Exhibition.

Gold Coast City Art Gallery: Le bonheur au quotidien (happiness of our daily life) Illustrations by Gold Coast Artist Eric Koo  Until 10 August 2008 Eric Koo is a Gold Coast based artist, quietly creating line drawings that reflect some of the most current and complex issues in contemporary art practice.  Postcolonialism, multiculturalism, globalisation and cultural identity are all at the forefront of discourse within the arts, and Eric Koo brings an individual voice to those debates by making work with subtle humour, candor and incisive observation.

Hervey Bay Regional Gallery: Every Which Way until 14 June. Every Which Way is a delightful collection of paintings and drawings by members of the DCR Art Group, tutored by established Fraser Coast artist Neta Alcorn.
It’s a Dog’s Life: National Archives of Australia Travelling Exhibition showcasing a fascinating array of unusual public servants including horses, donkeys, camels, mules, pigeons, various insects, cats, dogs and bullocks. They have all helped shape Australia and despite all their hard work, the animals in the public service rarely complained, never took tea breaks and didn't even get paid. Until June 14.

Nominations are now open for the Art-Is-In Regional Art Awards - Mackay

Bursary Opportunity - Positive Solutions Clayton Utz Travelling Scholarship. LAUNCH consists of two bursaries each totaling $5,000 for artists based in Queensland (or with a close connection to the state) who are building a career in the visual arts in the areas of painting, photography, drawing or wall based practice. The scholarship provides assistance towards professional development and aims to promote audience development. The bursaries will be awarded twice in 2008, one in July and one in December. Xstrata Percival Portrait Award 2008 is a celebration of art in Townsville, and will once again be indicative of the great and varied talents of artists within the region.
