Regeneration

24 – 30 August 2008

Acclaimed artists Judy Holding and David Frazer will lead this year’s retreat in the unique landscape of far north Queensland. Based at the Daradgee Environmental Education Centre near Innisfail, participants will visit a number of inspiring locations in this beautiful tropical area that has been gradually recovering from the impact of Cyclone Larry in 2006.

Judy Holding is a Melbourne-based artist who has been practising for more than 25 years and has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia. Judy has a long association with the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory which has informed her sensual visual language of colours and symbols, repeated and reconfigured in suites of paintings, drawings and three-dimensional objects.

“Judy’s work is mainly about feeling the energy of the land, the prevailing atmosphere, the distance and relationship between places, and communicating the underlying forces of the landscape.” Beaver Galleries, Canberra. David Frazer is an Australian artist living in Melbourne who works with wood engraving, painting, etching, lithography, lino and bronze. Initially known for his prints, especially wood engraving, David has also been gaining a reputation for his paintings. David’s work is accessible, sometimes melancholic and sometimes humourous.  He dignifies human frailty, portraying the yearning, disappointment, failed ambition, alienation, and delusion most people have experienced at least sometime in their life. According to David, “A narrative runs through my work portraying the story of the lonely rural misfit dreaming of being somewhere else and being someone more interesting. Dreaming of love and home and dreaming of burning it all down and escaping. He’s Mr. Vertigo, wanting fame and success, (to be popular really), wanting to fly but afraid of heights.”

David Frazer’s works belongs in most of the major art galleries in Australia, many regional galleries, State Libraries and University collections. He is represented by five commercial galleries in Australia and also in galleries in Hong Kong and London. He recently was a major prize winner in the 1st International Print Biennial in Gaunlan, China. David has taught extensively in high schools, universities and adult workshop programs.
