History
Flying Arts was founded in 1971 by Merv Moriarty - pictured above, as a cultural counterpart to Queensland’s Royal Flying Doctor Service. Flying Arts’ central values, along with its founding principle that the arts should not be the exclusive privilege of those who live in major cities, remain unchanged. These are:
- Arts and visual arts practice are a vital part of Australian culture.
- Our artists lead and inform our programs.
- We recognise Australia’s culturally diverse artists and artistic practice.
- The arts have the capacity to enhance the quality of life.
What is also unchanged is:
- regional artists’ passionate commitment to expanding their own practice and to communicating across, and often despite, distance;
- the ‘can do’ philosophy which commits Flying Arts to delivering services to the most remote community; and
- a shared belief that ‘the sky’s the limit’ where creative energy and achievement are concerned.
In recent years Flying Arts has continued to emphasise the professional aspects of the operation. Highlights here include the development of an accredited certificate program with TAFE Queensland delivered online, the embedding of masterclasses as part of the Touring Program, use of nationally and internationally renowned touring artists, the development of ArtistBANK whereby past touring artists can be invited back to communities to raise practice levels even higher , extension classes in regional schools, special projects such as festivals and the publication of an Anthology which is one of the very few publications in Australia that address critical issues in the visual arts.
