The Australian Arts Stories project which aims to document the effect on regional artists of visiting Flying Arts' tutors over the years was financially assisted by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Community Assistance Program of the Centenary of Federation Queensland. The arts community who supported it gave it wings. They did this by taking the time to talk about their art, when they could have been making it. Others assisted by providing invaluable documentary material and guidance. The informants shared their frustrations, their joys and their insights, about making art and the pivotal role of the Flying Arts tutors in their story. This was often a difficult thing to do, but the following pages are all the better for their candour. We would also like to thank the regional coordinators: Marilyn Haertell (Central Queensland), Lorraine Barnes (South-West Queensland) and Jill O'Sullivan (North-West Queensland) for providing so much assistance in so many ways. Appreciation is also extended to the Queensland Art Gallery for making their files accessible to the project. Lesley Jenkins
